PPP reviews names for new Governor of Punjab

SAMAA
KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Friday has started to review names for the New Governor of Punjab.

After the sudden assassination of Governor Punjab Salman Taseer in Kohsar Market, Islamabad on January 4 by his elite force’s body guard Mumtaz Qadri, the post of Punjab’s Governor is vacant.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have started to review names of competent candidates to fill the vacant post of Governor Punjab.

The PPP needs a strong candidate to replace Salman Taseer in the largest province, by population, of Pakistan. Many names were initially under consideration including Qamar Zaman Kaira, Babar Awan, Zaka Ashraf and Asma Jahangir.

The Federal Law Minister Babar Awan was being considered a strong candidate as yesterday he was specially called by President Zardri in Karachi for the consultation regarding appointment of new Punjab Governor but all speculations about him have failed as he has refused to accept the post.

After Babar Awan, the President of Pakistan Bar Council Asma Jahangir was also seen and named as a strong choice as the future Governor of Punjab but her name has been also removed from list as she has categorically refused to accept the post.

Asma Jahangir said while talking to SAMAA that she has been not contacted by any body to become new Governor of Punjab but if some one had contacted still she would have flatly refused as she is not at all interested to accept such posts.

The refusal of Babar Awan and Asma Jahangir has compelled the PPP to consider few other names to fill the vacant post of Governor Punjab.
